Rachel Wyrwa and Mike Rubino named WNEC athletes of the week

The weekly WNEC athlete of the week was given out to WNEC Softball's Rachel Wyrwa and WNEC baseball's own Mike Rubino.

Rubino, the starting 2B for the G-Bears, was also named the TCCC player of the week after going 10-18 with 3 RBI and 10 runs scored over the course of the week that included a 5 games at the Greater Phoenix Invitational in Arizona, and a doubleheader sweep over Salve Regina.  The sophomore from Northford, CT is off to a fast start in the 2011 season, starting all 10 games at 2B for WNEC, batting .447 with a 3B, 6 RBI, at team-leading 16 runs scored and a 1.063 OPS.  Defensively he has been solid despite making 3 errors at second.

Outfielder Rachel Wyrwa, player of the week on the womens side, was the TCCC softball player of the week, leading WNEC to 3 wins in their final 5 games at the National Training Center in Florida after dropping the first 5 contests.  In the 10 games at NTC, she hit .529 (18-34) with 7 2B, 2 HR, 13 RBI, 8 runs scored to go along with an astronomical .912 slugging percentage.  The junior from Methuen, MA has already exceeded her 2B total and matched her HR total from all of last year.
