WNEC Baseball bounces back with 3-2 victory

After suffering their third loss against a TCCC opponent Thursday in a 7-1 loss to Wentworth, WNEC bounced back to defeat Salve Regina 3-2 in 11 innings to advance to the TCCC semi-finals.

Salve Regina began the game with a bang in the top of the first, with Charles Matarazzo leading off the game with a single and scoring one batter later when Alex Melcher doubled to left center, giving Salve a 1-0 lead.  The G-Bears would finally answer in the third inning when Andrew Fatse crossed the plate on a fielders choice by Tony Trubia to tie the score at 1.  Salve would regain the lead in the 6th with a Matt Copone RBI single that drove in Melcher, giving the Seahawks a 2-1 lead.

Both starters held batters at bay, with Brandon Bursie going 6.1 IP with 1 unearned run on 3 hits and 3 walks and striking out 7.  WNEC starter Evan Michaud outlasted Bursie, going 7 innings allowing 2 runs on 6 hits and 3 strikeouts.

The G-Bears season and 5-year conference championship streak was an out away from ending when freshman Jeff Schult was driven in by Andrew Fatse to put the game into extras.  In the extra frames, WNEC reliever Mike Lawlor retired all 6 men he faced, 4 of which were strikeouts.  In the bottom of the 11th inning, Schult would score his second run of the game off the bat of Fatse, giving the Golden Bears the win and a spot in the TCCC semi-finals.

The G-Bears face will attempt to avenge their loss to Wentworth when they face them once again Saturday.  They will need to win twice in order to advance to the finals and have a chance at their 6th consecutive conference championship.
